Wooden Balinese barong mask
Barong is a Balinese mythological creature. Lord of the forest, head of the forces of good, charged with very strong spiritual power, he protects from evil.
The battle between Barong and Rangda represents the eternal struggle of good and evil and is represented by the dance of the Barong
This mask has a removable headdress cut out of lace-like cardboard, painted gold on a red background with shards of the mirror. The jaw is articulated as the Barong chattering teeth during public performances. The eyes are bulging, the canines prominent and the beard, the most sacred part of the Barong is in horsehair.
It is made of Pulee wood, cardboard, horsehair, wool and mirror shards.
